Fundraising event: Young Musicians of the World 2004 For the third year, artists of Quebec support the cause
Quebec, October 3th 2004. In order to finance free traditional music schools for young people from villages and working class neighborhoods, the organization Young Musicians of the World proposes two fundraising events at the Théatre Le Capitole in Quebec City, on Friday night, October the 15th 2004, and at the Métropolis in Montréal on Thursday the 28th October 2004.
Many artists will be present for this third year : Yves Lambert (founding member of La Bottine Souriante) as our master of ceremonies, Ariane Moffatt, Éloi Painchaud, Les Batinses, Colectivo, Orioxy, DJ Stéphane Cocke, Badya Shree Guy Bernier, Gurpreet Singh Chana, Ware River Club, Joao Carmo Domingues and the Collectif capoeira sul de Bahia (Brazilian martial dance). Besides, Marc Déry, Florent Volant and Stefie Shock have confirmed that they will be part of the event held in Montreal.
During each of the two nights, the audience will be able to watch some extracts of the documentary filmed by the Quebec-based team of young filmmakers Gadjo Dilo Films at the Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalya, the school managed by Young Musicians of the World in India. Driven by the success of last year fundraising event, which was held at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Young Musicians of the World could continue its mission and promote it even better. That night, more than seven hundred people attended the excellent performances of Jim Corcoran, Loco Locass, Charles Biddle Jr., Pierre Lapointe, Éloi Painchaud, Vander, Micheline Bouzigon, Bourrasque Celtique, Frédéric Lebrasseur, and Martin Bélanger.
Young Musicians of the World (Jeunes musiciens du monde) is a registered charitable organization working with young people from villages and neighborhoods in Quebec and abroad. Partners with Jeunesse du Monde (Youth of the World), our mission is to open and operate high quality schools around the world in which the traditional music of their own country will be taught. In these privileged learning places, the goal is to give children and teenagers a chance to express their full creative potential, by offering them an excellent education for free. Ultimately, Young Musicians of the World aspires to produce accomplished musicians and wants to give visibility and to develop the musical traditions of the countries where such projects are or will be established. Young Musicians of the World - now in India and Quebec – was founded with the conviction that a better world is possible.
The first goal of our organization was to provide free musical and academic teaching, as well as lodging and food, to some fifty children of Dharwad, India. Then, the founders quickly realized there were young people in their hometown (Quebec City) that could certainly benefit from their experience. Therefore, in November 2003, a new school opened at the Patro Laval Community Center, located in the Saint Sauveur district and called l’École des musiques traditionnelles de Saint-Sauveur
A similar school, l’École de musique traditionnelle La Bolduc, will be opening in Montreal this fall at the Pavillon d’éducation communautaire for young people of the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district. The school will be financed with some of the funds raised during the Montreal show held on the 28th of October 2004.
Blaise Fortier, one of the organization founder, will receive, on October 22th 2004, the Dollard-Morin’s volunteering prize, volunteer of the year, awarded by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, Sports and Recreation.
The fundraising event of September 19th 2003 held at the Musée des beaux-arts du Québec brought 70% of the financing needed to the activities offered by Young Musicians of the World for 2003-2004. Therefore, by attending to this years program, you will be supporting this musical adventure and allowing youngsters to make a dream come true: to become musicians.
The show, at the cost of 30$ (25$ in pre-sale), will take place on October 15th at 8 h 30 p. m. at the Capitole Theater of Quebec and on October 28th at 7 h 30 p. m. at the Métropolis of Montreal. A cocktail will be organized only in Quebec between 6 p. m. and 8 h 30 p. m. at the cost of 125$ (including a ticket for the show and a charity receipt of 50$). Please note that, during the cocktail, there will be an auction sale of several works of art by Pierre Lussier, Marius Dubois, Luc Archambault, Lysanne Pépin, Monique Guay, and other artists.
